American Manufacturing Innovation: From the Medicine Cabinet to the Mill Floor

Most factory tours begin with a machine. This one begins in your medicine cabinet.

A syringe filled precisely. A vial closed securely. A diagnostic product packaged correctly. A bottle of lotion, mascara, or healthcare product filled without turning the production floor into an expensive Jackson Pollock painting.

Nobody thinks about the machine that filled their allergy medication. Nobody wonders who engineered the cartridge in their insulin pen. That's the whole point. The best manufacturing in this country is often the manufacturing you never think about at all, because it just works, every single time, without fail.

This week I saw two versions of American manufacturing innovation that couldn't look more different on the surface. One fills syringes in North Carolina. The other rebuilt an entire town in Virginia out of the wreckage of an industry that used to define it. Same country. Same relentless refusal to stand still. Two completely different stories.



groninger USA: Not a Distant Satellite

I recently had the privilege of stepping inside groninger USA in Charlotte, North Carolina, and filming a factory that helps keep some of the world's most sensitive products moving. Its machines fill and close syringes, vials, cartridges, consumer healthcare products, and cosmetics.

The groninger & co. gmbh story began in Germany in 1980, when Horst and Eva Groninger founded the company in Crailsheim. Horst's rotary piston pump helped manufacturers fill pharmaceutical and cosmetic products more precisely and hygienically. Today, groninger remains family-owned, operates across Crailsheim, Schnelldorf, and Charlotte, and employs more than 1,700 people worldwide.

The German mothership supplies decades of engineering experience. But what I discovered in Charlotte was not some distant satellite waiting for instructions from across the Atlantic.

Here's the thing about a lot of American operations tied to European parent companies — they end up feeling like a branch office. A place that assembles what gets shipped over, follows the manual, and calls it a day. That's not what I found.

Groninger established its American operation in 1997, moved to Charlotte in 2007, and opened its current facility in 2012. Today, the location supports customers throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico with engineering, service, retrofits, technical support, spare parts, and local manufacturing. Groninger's Charlotte operation can manufacture most replacement parts locally and develop and produce nearly all customized format parts in-house.

That's not a satellite office. That's a second home.

Most parent companies keep the real engineering work close to the mothership and let the overseas operation handle assembly and paperwork. Groninger didn't build it that way. They built a location that can think for itself.

During my visit, I saw its investment in advanced machining technology from United CNC Machining, the organization carrying forward the familiar GF Machining Solutions heritage. You don't invest in equipment like that if you're planning to stay small. You invest in equipment like that if you're planning to grow into something the parent company is proud to call an equal.

And that's exactly what's happening. Groninger announced a $15.1 million expansion of its Charlotte manufacturing operation, with plans to create 60 additional positions and increase its workforce from 112 to 172 employees over five years. Through partnerships with Central Piedmont Community College, Apprenticeship Charlotte, and University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the company is developing the next generation of machinists, engineers, and advanced-manufacturing professionals.

That's a German company betting real money that Charlotte, North Carolina is where the next generation of its workforce gets built. Not Crailsheim. Charlotte.

Danville, Virginia: Rebuilt From What Cotton Left Behind

For more than a century, Danville, Virginia, was stitched together by cotton and tobacco.

Dan River Mills began manufacturing textiles here in 1882, and eventually grew into one of the largest textile companies in the world. At its postwar peak, the company employed approximately 14,000 people in a city of roughly 40,000 residents. Think about that ratio for a second. One out of every three people in that town, directly on the payroll of one company.

Generations worked inside those mills. Grandparents, parents, children, and neighbors punched the same clocks, walked through the same gates, and turned cotton into sheets, towels, and livelihoods. Company-wide employment eventually surpassed 18,000 people in 1956. For a while, Danville wasn't just a manufacturing town. It was a company town, and the company was the town.

Then production began migrating to lower-cost countries. Automation changed the labor equation. American textile companies consolidated, downsized, and disappeared one after another, like dominos that had been standing for a century and finally got tipped.

Dan River entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2004, was sold in 2006, and its remaining Danville operations closed. The buildings that once thundered with machinery fell silent, and much of the enormous Riverside complex was eventually demolished.

That's the part of the American manufacturing story most people know. The mill closes. The jobs leave. The town gets a write-up in a newspaper somewhere about "the death of American manufacturing," and everyone moves on to the next headline.

Danville didn't move on. Danville rebuilt.

That realization helped inspire the creation of The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in 2002. Established as a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia and supported partly by tobacco-settlement funding, IALR was designed to help diversify and transform Southern Virginia's economy. Its original 90,000-square-foot building broke ground in 2002, opened in 2004, and became fully operational in 2005.

Today, one of its most powerful centerpieces is the Center for Manufacturing Advancement, a 51,250-square-foot, $28.8 million investment created to help manufacturers introduce new technology, improve processes, validate ideas, train people, and scale operations without gambling the entire company on an unproven production strategy.

That last part matters more than it sounds like it should. A lot of small and mid-sized shops know exactly what new technology could do for them. They just can't afford to be wrong about it. The CMA exists so a manufacturer can test the idea before betting the whole business on it.

The CMA also houses the U.S. Navy's Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence, where organizations are helping accelerate the development, qualification, and deployment of additively manufactured components for America's maritime industrial base. A textile town that used to make sheets and towels is now part of the supply chain building components for the U.S. Navy. Let that sink in for a second.

During my visit, I had the opportunity to learn from Jason Wells, Jeremiah Williams, and Alan Pearce — three people who represent different but interconnected pieces of this transformation.

Two Different Cities, One American Story


groninger built a second home in Charlotte instead of settling for a satellite office. Danville rebuilt an entire economy out of the ashes of the industry that used to define it.

Neither story happened by accident. Neither one happened overnight either. A German company doesn't invest $15.1 million and grow its workforce by 50% out of sentiment. A state doesn't build a $28.8 million manufacturing center because it sounds nice on a brochure. Both of these things happened because people made a deliberate choice not to accept decline as the final answer.

That's American manufacturing innovation. Not a slogan. Not a hashtag. A German pump company deciding Charlotte deserves the same investment as its own headquarters. A textile town that lost 18,000 jobs deciding its next chapter would be written in additive manufacturing instead of an obituary.

I've walked through a lot of factories that got there by playing it safe. These two didn't.

You can build American manufacturing innovation two completely different ways. You can be the German company that decides its American operation deserves the same investment as headquarters. Or you can be the town that lost its entire identity and decided the next one would be built on purpose instead of by accident.

Either way works. What doesn't work is standing still and hoping the industry comes back to you.
